Medicare Advantage Takes the Spotlight in Texas

DECEMBER 19, 2016

Seniors from the CMC joined a meeting in Lubbock with Representative-elect Jodey Arrington to discuss the importance of the Medicare Advantage program to seniors in Northwest Texas.

Local seniors shared their personal stories with Representative-elect Arrington about how Medicare Advantage plans are providing high-quality, affordable coordinated care, and the importance of preserving seniors’ choices when it comes to health care.

“It was a pleasure to meet last week with a group of our valued senior citizens and other business leaders to discuss the issues facing our healthcare system. Programs like Medicare Advantage that emphasize wellness and preventive care are an important part of ensuring consumers are able to make their own healthcare choices,” said Representative-elect Jodey Arrington. “It is clear that we must fix our broken healthcare system, and move decision-making away from Washington and to patients, families, and doctors. These senior citizens reminded me of a saying that applies directly to our nation’s healthcare issues: ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!’”

In Texas, more than 1.1 million beneficiaries have chosen Medicare Advantage plans for their high-quality, affordable coverage. Seniors from the Coalition asked Representative-elect Arrington to work to protect Medicare Advantage benefits when he arrives in Congress in January.

“As someone who lives with multiple sclerosis, Medicare Advantage has been a blessing for me. The programs they offer have increased my mobility substantially and improved my quality of life,” said CMC member Beth Furgerson of Lubbock. “I and many of my fellow senior citizens urge Congress to keep funding this program. We love it for many reasons.”

Medicare Advantage is the part of Medicare through which private health plans provide comprehensive health care coverage to seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Nationwide, more than 17 million Americans choose Medicare Advantage because of the higher-quality care, financial protections, and added benefits these health care plans provide. Research shows that 9 out of 10 Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are satisfied with their coverage.

Thanks for taking the time, Rep.-elect Arrington!
