Coalition Members Meet with the Office of Senator Scott

Five members of the Coalition for the Medicare Choices (CMC) recently met with the office of Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) where they discussed how Medicare Advantage provides seniors and individuals with disabilities better services, better access to care, and better value.

Senator Scott’s staff member told the group, “We are absolutely in full support of Medicare Advantage. It is impossible for any policymaker to argue against Medicare Advantage because it works.”

Ernie, executive director of the Florida Silver Haired Legislature, shared that many of his members are on Medicare Advantage and appreciate the affordability and peace of mind the program provides. Ernie said Medicare Advantage offers more benefits than original Medicare and added that people really appreciate the cap on out-of-pocket costs and lower prescription drug prices.

Coalition member Barney signed up for Medicare Advantage recently and has been impressed by all the benefits available. He said he was excited to receive quality eyeglasses and to utilize workout programs such as Silver Sneakers, which is geared toward older individuals. Barney’s wife is younger, he said, but she looks forward to joining Medicare Advantage in a few years.

Julio, another Coalition member, said that Medicare Advantage is very important for the state’s Hispanic population because it is affordable for those on a fixed income. He said the popularity of Medicare Advantage in South Florida shows how valuable the program is for seniors. Julio added, “From transportation to mental and physical health, Medicare Advantage serves everyone.”

Coalition member Mari joined a Medicare Advantage plan when she was diagnosed with severe lupus. She said she is grateful Medicare Advantage satisfies her health needs, including receiving COVID-19 treatment at no cost. The private market allows for more competition which keeps costs low for Medicare Advantage enrollees, she said. Mari closed by saying she loves the convenience and one-stop-shop nature of Medicare Advantage.

Kendra, a Coalition advocate, is a caregiver for her father who is on Medicare Advantage. He relies heavily on Medicare Advantage, and the plan takes care of his many needs, including mental health. Kendra said she loves that her father’s plan truly cares about him, especially because he is a veteran who has given so much to this country.

Senator Scott’s staff member reiterated the Senator’s support for Medicare Advantage saying, “Senator Scott is one of the most vocal supporters of Medicare Advantage.”

The CMC is grateful to the office of Senator Scott for meeting with our Coalition members and for his continued support of Medicare Advantage.
