3 New Things to Try in September

September 17, 2018

September is Healthy Aging Month, and there’s no better time to think about how to be the healthiest you possible.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and there’s no better time to think about how to be the healthiest you possible – everything from physical to mental to social well-being. In other words, this is the perfect month to try something new. In the spirit of healthy aging, here are three new things you can try to create a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Eat healthy. A balanced diet is one of the best ways to jump-start a healthy lifestyle for older Americans. Reports show that as you age fruits and vegetables play a more crucial role, especially to prevent health conditions caused by aging, like dementia. The National Kidney Foundation offers great guidelines to make healthier food choices.
  2. Work out. Ever wanted to try that yoga class, dance class, or sport? Why not start today? Studies show that at least 45 minutes a day of activity can prevent memory loss and chronic diseases. According to research, there are three exercises that you should be doing as you age: aerobics, strength training, and stretches for flexibility. Fitness programs like Silver Sneakers—a partnering program of Medicare Advantage plans—offers older Americans access to gym memberships and many group fitness classes. If joining a class isn’t your cup of tea, here are four simple exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home.
  3. Socialize. It can be hard to keep up with longtime friends and family, but studies show that being social wards off loneliness and depression, which enhances mental health. Volunteering is a great way to rejuvenate your social life and prevent isolation. Studies show that adults aged 60-plus who volunteer report higher levels of well-being and lower rates of disability than those who did not volunteer. The AARP Foundation offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for older Americans.

It’s never too late to try something new. Healthy Aging Month is the perfect time to start something you’ve always wanted to try. Whether it’s to improve your physical, mental, or social health, make September a month to focus on you.
