Coalition Members Meet with Representative-elect Davis

Three members of the Coalition for Medicare Choices (CMC) recently met with Representative-elect Don Davis (D-NC-01) to share their personal stories about the value of Medicare Advantage and the high-quality, affordable care the program provides.

Coalition member Mary shared that she joined Medicare Advantage several years ago, and she and her husband have enjoyed its benefits. In particular, she said she loves participating in SilverSneakers fitness classes. Mary said many of her fellow participants feel that the program has helped prevent serious health conditions or injuries, thanks to exercising in SilverSneakers classes. She said telehealth benefits have also been important for her, because one of her providers is 3 hours away from her home. Telehealth has enabled her to get the care she needs from the comfort of home, saving time and money.

Judith, another Coalition member, said she has been on Medicare Advantage for many years. Recently, Judith has been battling breast cancer, and her Medicare Advantage coverage has become more important than ever. Earlier this year, she needed surgery and radiation, and her coverage allowed her to see the best doctors. She said that Medicare Advantage has allowed her to fight cancer without worrying about medical bills.

Coalition advocate Shanne shared that her sister was diagnosed with cancer. Even while struggling with a disease, Medicare Advantage has helped maintain her sister’s quality of life and low-cost medical bills.

Representative-elect Davis thanked the participants for sharing their stories. He told Coalition members that when he joined the state Senate, he was glad to be placed on the health care committee, “because everyone has to agree on health care, right?” Representative-elect Davis said in all seriousness, that he was grateful to gain a better understanding of Medicare Advantage in North Carolina and among his senior constituents. He said he would support the program and do what he can to help strengthen it in Congress.
