Letter: Medicare Advantage Brings Peace of Mind to New Mexico’s Seniors

New Mexico’s population is growing with one key demographic – retirees! According to U.S. Census data, the total population of New Mexico increased 2.8% from 2010 to 2020, but the population of people 65 and older jumped by nearly 44% during the same period.
I’ve lived in New Mexico for 55 years. As a retiree myself, I very much enjoy the weather and cost of living, which no doubt attracts other retirees to the state, as well as spending quality time with my friends and grandchildren. People over 65 have different healthcare needs than younger generations. With this in mind, we’re grateful that Senator Heinrich continues to support health plans that work for New Mexico.
Earlier this year, Senator Heinrich joined his Senate colleagues in signing a letter of support for Medicare Advantage, a public-private initiative that provides high-value yet low-cost health care for seniors. With over 204,000 seniors in New Mexico enrolled in Medicare Advantage, it’s reassuring to see our elected officials stand up for retired adults in our state.
In comparison to other health care plans on the market, Medicare Advantage offers comprehensive coverage with the most bang for your buck. In addition to features you can find through original Medicare, this program includes plans for vision, hearing, and dental services as well as coverage for prescription drug costs. As many seniors transition into retirement and start relying on fixed incomes and spending accounts, the value of the coverage at this price point is hard to beat.
While cost is a big determining factor in choosing a health care plan, ease of use is important to consider as well – especially for seniors. Medicare Advantage takes this into account and makes navigating the health care system much easier for us.
As a senior, I can admit that my health is not quite what it used to be, but that doesn’t keep me from prioritizing my well-being. With Medicare Advantage, I have access to telehealth appointments and prescription delivery, which allows me to stay connected with my health care team from the comfort of my own home.
The options for health care can be overwhelming. When I eventually found my plan through Medicare Advantage, I knew this coverage was the right fit for me. I encourage all seniors in New Mexico to do their research because this program could be ideal for you too. Plus, we’ve got steadfast advocates in Washington, like Senator Heinrich, fighting for us and the care we need. With that, I’d like to thank our Senator and his fellow policymakers from across the country for standing up for the well-being of seniors when it matters most.
